Corcoran, Almegro Win 41st Granby Road Race [Video]

West Hartford’s Joe Corcoran won the 41st running of the Granby Road Race on Saturday afternoon.

Corcoran ran the 10 kilometer course, which wended its way through before ending in the front of , in 39:32. [See video of Corcoran's finish]

“It always feels good to win,” said Corcoran, who added that the humidity made for some difficulty.

Granby’s Megan Almegro, a senior at the high school, was the first female to finish in 44:28, which was good enough for 18th overall. [See video for Almegro's finish]

The first Granby finisher was Jeffrey Fleming, who crossed the finish line fifth with a time of 41:20.

Some 173 runners - including Granby Chief of Police Carl Rosensweig, First Selectman John Adams and members of the Granby Memorial High softball team - started the race, representing an increase of 33 participants over last year, according to Executive Director Marcy Yanus.

Most of the runners were from area towns, including Granby, Avon, Simsbury, Suffield, Farmington and Windsor.

“It’s a community tradition,” Yanus said.

Proceeds from the race - between $6,000 and $7,000 - go to the Farmington Valley Y’s Strong Kids campaign, which provides funds to families who otherwise cannot afford to send their children to summer camp.

The race, the second-oldest in Connecticut, was run in memory of David A. Schupp, Jr., a Granby resident and runner who died when he was struck by a car in 1988.
