West Hartford Athletes on Campus: Corrales Scores Twice in Her Debut

A weekly roundup of the best from former West Hartford scholastic athletes who are now playing in college.

The fall sports season is coming to a close for many colleges, but the winter sports season is heating up ... Emily Corrales (Conard High ‘13), a first-year on the University of New England women’s hockey team, scored two goals in her debut as the Nor’easters opened the 2013-14 season on Nov. 1 with a 3-1 victory over Chatham University. After two games, Corrales’ two goals leads the team. … Jessie Ustjanauskas (Hall High ‘12), a sophomore on the William & Mary women’s swimming and diving team, was part of a 200 medley relay that placed first in 1:47.53 in a quad meet against Delaware,  UNCW and James Madison on Nov. 2. Ustjanauskas also set a personal best in the 100 fly with a time of 57.43, which was good enough for second place at the meet. Her time is the 14th-fastest in school history. Over the summer, she competed at the Virginia Senior Championships and just missed the Olympic Trial cut in the 100 meter fly by .5 seconds. … West Hartford native Zach Punt (Kingswood-Oxford ‘11), a junior back on the Connecticut College men’s soccer team, scored 3 goals and had 1 assist for the 8-5-2 Camels. … Three West Hartford residents - Lily Cannon (Conard High ‘12) and Annie and Cathy Higgins (Northwest Catholic High ‘13) - are members of the Connecticut College women’s soccer team. Cannon started 10 of 14 games for the Camels, scoring one goal and assisting on 3 others. Annie Higgins led the team in points with 8 (two goals, four assists), while starting 14 matches, while Cathy Higgins started 8 matches, logging a goal and an assist. The Camels finished the year with a record of 3-7-4. … Kate Gustafson (Conard High ‘13), a freshman diver on the Wittenberg University swimming and diving team, scored 121.55 points in the 1-meter event in a meet against Ohio Wesleyan on Nov. 1. She scored 126.95 points in the 3-meter event, securing a victory. Her performance helped Wittenberg defeat Ohio Wesleyan 144.5 - 82.5. … Dominique Spaulding (Conard High ‘12), a sophomore defensive lineman on the Mount Ida College football team, had five tackles, including one for a 1-yard loss, in a 38-19 loss to Norwich on Nov. 2. He leads the team in sacks with 4.5. … Emily Wieczorek (Hall High ‘12), a sophomore on the Fairfield University women’s soccer team, helped lead the Stags to a 1-0 victory over Siena in the MAAC semifinals on Nov. 3. Wieczorek, according to the Fairfield University website, “played a ball to [teammate Ashley] Small near the left sideline. Small then dribbled past two defenders and past the keeper, beating another Siena defender with the shot into the side netting on the opposite side.” The goal, the only one of the game, was scored in the 68th minute. Teammate Megan O’Brien (Hall High ‘11) played all 90 minutes to help the Stags earn the clean sheet. Unfortunately, Fairfield dropped a 2-0 decision to Monmouth in the MAAC title game on Nov. 4.
