"The Listening Space"--a West Hartford Open Mic--in March

The March 15 “Listening Space” at Covenant Congregational Church welcomed back singer/guitarist Leigh, whose earthy Southern Gospel sound warmed-up the audience like the hope of spring. Al and Libby Therriault—aka “Add-Lib”—expanded their repertoire with some new cover songs that showed-off their great guitar, mandolin, and vocal skills. “Meek, mild-mannered” Caden VanDerMeid did a “SUPER” job singing the “Dinosaur Song” without stumbling over the scientific name of a single extinct Mesozoic reptile!

Jim Rogers, who runs the “WoodSongs Coffeehouse” at UConn in Storrs, made his debut at the “Listening Space” on a borrowed guitar, singing a moving original tune about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities. Charles “Chas” Merlis added drama and comedy to the evening with a lively rendition of “Casey at the Bat” and an original poem. Taryn Elise lent her grace and charm, singing some touching cover songs and gently accompanying herself on ukulele. Eric Paradine followed Taryn’s lead with his tune "Ukulele You" from his CD, “From There to Here.” Eric rounded off his set with two sultry blues/jazz originals, and Joe Bleicher joined him to close out the night with a round of romping and foot-stomping folk songs.

The "Listening Space" is a free event at Covenant Congregational Church, 1 Westminster Dr., West Hartford. Sign-up is at 6:30 pm and the music starts at 7:00. PA, amp, and electric keyboards are provided. Free snacks. For more information, or to reserve a slot, call Jami at 860-977-0607 or email Chris at christine.r.marchetti@gmail.com.
