Cape Town South Africa Exchange

The Day Before the Trip to Cape Town

Tomorrow, Feb. 15, we take off on the first ever exchange trip between and and Camps Bay High School in Cape Town, South Africa. We have 32 students from the town's two high schools traveling for 11 days. They will live with families there and two weeks after our return, the Camps Bay students will come to West Hartford for 11 days.

What an opportunity! Liz Devine and I have been planning this trip for almost a year now. We both teach Human Rights classes and we see going to South Africa as a great real world study. Students have attended more than 10 classes over the last six months as they learned about South African history, the fall of apartheid and the struggles of a multi-racial society only 20 years old.

I will be fascinated to gauge the tenor of race relations in a country that in some ways mirrored our Jim Crow past. I understand the country is just beautiful, and Cape Town is perceived as a "world class city." So here we go!!
