Here are five things going on in the area this week.

Good morning, West Hartford! Today is Monday, Oct. 21, 2013; there are 71 days left in the year.

Friends, I know I am not making any earth-shattering observations here, but babies are like cats.

You buy toys for them, which they may take an interest in for a few minutes. But then they start playing with stuff that not only isn’t a toy, but is life-threatening. The power cord to my computer is a frequent target for the baby.

1. The Town Council meets on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. A public hearing on a moratorium on marijuana production and retail facilities is scheduled for 7 p.m.

2. Leaf pickup begins in town today.

3. Big week of high school sports includes Hall/Conard boys and girls soccer on Wednesday. The boys play at Hall, the girls at Conard. Both games are at 3:45 p.m.

4. Halloween is just around the corner. My family rated candy corn, because be quiet, that’s why. Check it out here.

5. The state Class cross country championships are this Saturday. The Hall boys and Conard girls are contenders.
