Climb on Trucks, Shred Paper, at Annual Public Works Open House

West Hartford residents of all ages are invited to the third annual Department of Public Works Open House on Saturday.

Residents of all ages will find entertaining, productive, and informative activities at the third annual Department of Public Works Open House on Saturday, May 17.

Children (and many adults) love to “touch a truck,” and they will find plenty of fascinating equipment to check out at the event. Large machinery used in road paving, landscaping, and plowing, as well as some of the West Hartford Police and West Hartford Fire Department equipment will be on display. A limited number of plastic construction hats and activity books will be given away, so get there early!

While the kids are being entertained, adults can get personal documents shredded (residential only – not open to businesses) courtesy of Covanta Energy, the town’s trash-to-energy contractor, and also learn more about West Hartford’s recycling program. Public Works’ new camera system that is used to check for faults in underground storm and sewer pipes will also be on display.

Are you wondering how West Hartford Center’s new payment system for parking will work? Get your questions answered and check out a sample kiosk that will be on display at the Open House.

Posters from the elementary school “Building for Today, Planning for Tomorrow” will be exhibited.

There will be a drawing for a free bulky or metal object pickup, and handouts about hazardous waste and recycling collections and a “word find” for kids.

The Open House is free, but visitors are asked to bring a donation for the West Hartford Food Pantry, which supports town residents in need.

The third annual Public Works Open House will take place at 17 Brixton St., West Hartford, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., on Saturday, May 17. The event kicks off West Hartford’s observance of National Public Works Week, which began in 1960 to honor the often-unsung heroes who keep the town’s infrastructure running smoothly and support residents’ quality of life through work that includes plowing and repairing roads, picking up trash and recycling, collecting leaf bags, landscaping school and municipal buildings, and changing the bulbs in street lights.

Last year approximately 230 people attended the Open House, up from 75 in the inaugural year. The Department of Public Works hopes the event will be even bigger and better in 2014. For more information, call 860-561-8100.

Recycle This, Trash That, is a community outreach program for the Town of West Hartford funded by Covanta Industries, the town’s trash-to-energy facility. Ronni Newton is contracted as the recycling campaign editor for the Public Works Department in the Town of West Hartford.
