I sit in the 75 degree Phoenix sun laughing.......

But not really.  I actually have to fly home in whatever is going to happen tomorrow and try to not get stranded in the process.  This was a sneaky little storm.  Out here in the sun for the last two weeks. I have still kept an eye on the weather back there.  The nice January thaw arrived as predicted and snow seemed like a thing of the past for a bit.  Yesterday, it looked like all was good for a successful trip and no snow back home.  Suddenly dire predictions of 10 inches in Hartford (and two feet on the Cape) and uh oh.  First lets get some nonsense out of the way:  Rush Limbaugh was partially right.  The 'Polar Vortex' phrase is no doubt being used to create drama and ratings (and both quite successfully if casual conversation is any indicator).  The term is a lot older than I am and simply refers to the traditional west to east flow of air around the northern hemishpere.  It is no more a phenomenon than the jet stream or a cold front.  We had a cold snap caused by a change in flow of the jet stream that is a totally normal and typical winter pattern but this year it got a name.  Anything to sensationalize I guess.  Don't fret.  This winter is typical.  In fact, as of today, I'd argue that January is actually a tad milder than normal.  So what's gonna happen tomorrow and Weds?  It looks like we have a series of frontal boundaries draped from east to west that are slowly pushing south.  Little impulses of snow are forming along those boundaries and moving like a conveyor belt from west to east.  The one located over KY is going to pick up energy off the ocean and intensify once it moves east.  This is a pretty typical wintertime storm.  As has been the norm this year, this intensification will also help bring in colder temps assuring an all-snow event.  I think tomorrow early will be ok and I predict school will be in session with the likelihood of an early dismissal being small.  Wednesday will be messy (certainly to start) but I think the storm will have run its course by mid morning. with road travel by noon.  This will not rival (either in duration or intensity) the big storm last year (Cape folks, stay tuned on that point).  (apologies for poor spelling, I am working from a tiny tablet.  See you tomorrow (if I make it)!
