WHLL 11U 5, West Hartford 11U 3

The West Hartford 11U Bandits lost a heartbreaker to the West Hartford Little League Dirty Dogs 4-3 on Tuesday night to open the Southington Tournament.

The Bandits opened the scoring in the top of the first when Matt Lazor came home on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead.  The Dirty Dogs struck back in the bottom of the second, plating two runs in the frame on an RBI-double and a sacrifice fly to take a one run lead.  The Bandits tied the score in the top of the fourth when Timmy Andrews walked and scored on an RBI-double smashed off the bat of Chase Rancourt.  The Bandits then took the lead in the top of the fifth when Matt Lazor doubled in Gabe Salomons from first.

The Bandits, who had defeated the Dirty Dogs 17-10 in the Hungerford Tournament the previous week, were up 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth and had their cross-town rivals down to their last strike with the bases empty before the rally caps worked their magic for the Dirty Dogs and they eventually plated two runs with a hard ground ball to the outfield.

The Bandits got solid pitching from Griffin Van Rye, Matt Lazor, and Tim Cotter, but weren’t able to score enough runs along the way or hold the Dirty Dogs down at the end to take the victory.

The West Hartford 11U Bandits took care of business Friday night under the lights, cruising to a 20-2 victory over Rocky Hill in Hungerford Tournament action.  There was never any doubt of the end result as the Bandits built a 7-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.

Every player was involved in the offensive barrage as eight players had multiple hits and six players had multiple RBIs in the contest.

On the mound, Will Layden, Tommy Costello, and Jay Falvey all had solid outings and enabled the Bandits to invoke the mercy rule after four innings so they could have a little extra rest for their Saturday morning game versus Farmington at 9:00 AM in the Southington Tournament.

July 20th

West Hartford 13, Farmington 1

The West Hartford 11U Bandits beat a good Farmington team 13-1 Saturday morning in the Southington tournament to ready themselves for the Ripken State Tournament which commences Sunday.

The scoring opened in the bottom of the first when, after a Matt Lazor single, Tim Cotter drilled a 2-2 over the fence to build a 2-0 lead.  After the next batter struck out, the Bandits loaded the bases with a fielding error on a hit by Timmy Andrews, a single by Will Layden, and a walk to Jack Livingstone.  Chase Rancourt then came up and singled to drive in a third run, followed by walks to Andrew Gingold and Jay Falvey that scored two more runs.  During the next at bat, the catcher fired a throw off to first base to try to catch a runner sleeping, but ended up in right field and scored all three runners to increase the score to 8-0 at the end of the first inning.

In the bottom of the second the Bandits had another big inning.  It started with a walk to Ryan Farley, a single from Matt Lazor, a sacrifice bunt by Gabe Salomons, and an intentional walk to Tim Cotter to load the bases.  Griffin Van Rye came up next and made Farmington pay for the intentional pass.  He cracked a low hard line drive double to the wall, scoring two runs.  Timmy Andrews came up next and singled, scoring another two runs.  After a single from Will Layden, Jack Livingstone came up and singled home another run to close out the scoring for the Bandits.

On the mound, the Bandits had solid outings from Griffin Van Rye (1.1 innings), Gabe Salomons (2.1), and Tim Cotter (last out) to invoke the mercy rule at the end of the fourth inning to get out of the blistering heat.  The defensive play of the game came from Chase Rancourt who made a fly ball catch in right and gunned down a Farmington runner at the plate to end the second inning with a double play.

July 21st

West Hartford 13, Meriden 3

The West Hartford 11U Bandits looked sharp Sunday, beating South Meriden 13-3 to advance in the winner’s bracket of the Cal Ripken State Tournament at Wolcott Park.

The Bandits opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a six run barrage with two outs.  Tim Cotter, Griffin Van Rye, and Tim Andrews all walked before Will Layden came up and singled home two runs.  Chase Rancourt followed with a run scoring single.  Andrew Gingold followed with another walk during which Will Layden scored on a wild pitch.  Jay Falvey was up next and reached on an error from South Meriden which allowed two more runs to score for a 6-0 lead.

The Bandits allowed South Meriden to close in briefly by scoring three runs in the top of the third, but then they dropped the hammer in the bottom of the inning.  Timmy Andrews started things off with a double.  One batter later Chase Rancourt had an RBI single, followed by a double by Andrew Gingold.  Jay “the birthday boy” Falvey then came up and doubled home Rancourt and Gingold.  After Ryan Farley was hit by a pitch and Gabe Salomons walked the bases were loaded for the red hot Tim Cotter who crushed a 3-2 pitch past the lights in left center and into the pond to put the score at 13-3.

Jack Livingstone came in to pitch in the top of the fourth and shut down South Meriden to seal a mercy-rule victory for the Bandits.

The Bandits will be back in action Tuesday night in the winner’s bracket of the State Tournament.  Time and opponent are yet to be finalized.

July 17th

West Hartford 5, Simsbury 4

The West Hartford 9U Warriors won a dramatic battle Wednesday night, beating Simsbury 5-4 in the Mountain/River semifinals behind outstanding performances from Drew Seidman and Connor Ferguson.

The Warriors found themselves in a 4-0 hole in the third before the bats came alive.  Ferguson started things off with a single, followed by a walk from Sam Heller.  Ferguson was able to make it around to score by swiping a base and scoring on a wild pitch.  Shane Bradley then walked and one batter later, both Heller and Bradley scored when Drew Seidman ripped a single to center.  Seidman then scored to tie the game when Christian Pedro singled up the middle.

The game stayed knotted until the fifth inning, thanks to some outstanding pitching from Seidman and equally good defense from his Warriors teammates including athletic pop out catches behind the plate by Ferguson and Eli Salomons and another outstanding foul pop out catch from first baseman Seth Ehrlich.

A potential game saving defensive play occurred in the top of the fifth when the Warriors caught a Simsbury runner stealing home on a wild pitch.  In bottom half of the inning the Warriors took full advantage of the opportunity when Ferguson ripped a double to right, advanced to third on a passed ball, and then scored on a close play at the plate on a wild pitch.

Seidman came in for his third inning in the sixth and shut Simsbury down to close out the win and send the Warriors into the tournament finals.

July 18th

West Hartford 9, WHLL Dirty Dogs 1

The West Hartford 9U Warriors won the Mountain/River Tournament Thursday night with a 9-1 victory over the West Hartford Little League Dirty Dogs.

The game started out as a pitcher’s duel between the Warriors’ Eli Salomons and the Dirty Dogs’ Joe Dooley.  Both pitchers went three innings and it took until the bottom of the third for the first run to score when Mitch Baboff singled home Sam Heller to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth however, the Warriors took advantage of the Dirty Dogs’ pitching change and scored the inning maximum six runs without registering an out.
The highlight of the inning was a bases clearing line drive smash by Owen McGoldrick who ended up scoring on his hit only to find out that it wouldn’t count with the maximum score already being reached.  The Warriors added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to pad the lead.

In addition to McGoldrick, offensive leaders for the game included Mitch Baboff, Drew Seidman, and Christian Pedro who each had two hits for the game.

On the mound, Salomons registered the win with three scoreless innings and was relieved by Seth Ehrlich who pitched a scoreless fourth, and Pedro who pitched the final two frames to close out the championship.

July 20th

West Hartford 6, Bethel 5

The West Hartford 9U Warriors, down to their last out, rallied for a huge 6-5 win over Bethel to open the Ripken State Tournament Saturday afternoon in Danbury.

Bethel opened the scoring in the top of the first with a single run, but the Warriors came right back with three of their own in the bottom of the inning to surge ahead 3-1.  In the top of the second however, Bethel scored two more runs to tie the score.  Bethel added single runs in the third and fifth to build the 5-3 lead that they took into the bottom of the sixth, needing three outs to win.

For most of the game, the Warriors looked nervous and it showed in the field where they uncharacteristically had five errors, a high number of wild pitches, and allowed five runs on just three hits.  The team also went scoreless for the middle four innings and left themselves three outs to show what they were made of.

Sam Heller led off the bottom of sixth and came back from an 0-2 count to walk.  After the next two batters struck out, it was up to Drew Seidman.  Drew came through in the clutch, nailing a 1-0 pitch to the wall for a double that moved Heller to third and placed the tying run in scoring position.  On the very next pitch, Christian Pedro cracked a hard ground ball up the middle sending both runners home to tie the score.

During the next at bat Pedro was able to move around to third on wild pitches, but Eli Salomons was hit by a pitch with full count and sent down to first.  The very next pitch to Bobby LaChance was in the dirt and Pedro came barreling home to score and end the game in dramatic fashion.

July 21st

West Hartford 12, Southbury 2

The West Hartford 9U Warriors looked back to their old selves Sunday as they put away Southbury 13-3 in four innings to move on in the winner’s bracket of the Cal Ripken State Tournament in Danbury.

The Warriors were led by a dominant pitching performance from Eli Salomons who shut down Southbury for three innings, allowing the Warriors to build a 6-0 lead.  Salomons appeared to tire in the fourth and the Warriors gave up two runs to close the gap to 6-2 before Seth Ehrlich came in get the final out of the inning.  Salomons pitched three and two-thirds innings registering eight strikeouts and allowing only a single hit.

In the bottom of the fourth the Warriors put the game away with a six run barrage.  The game was capped off by a hustle play from Teddy Keegan who narrowly beat out a throw at first to allow the mercy-rule-invoking twelfth run to score.

On offense, Drew Seidman continued on his hitting tear going two for three, with three RBIs, and two runs scored.  Jack Kennedy (2 hits including a stand up triple, 3 runs, 1 RBI) and Eli Salomons (2 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBI) also made significant contributions.

The Warriors will be back in action Tuesday when they will face undefeated New Milford in the winner’s bracket at 8:00 PM at Rogers Field in Danbury.

Orioles 9, Cardinals 5

Friends, it wasn’t just another day of the relentlessly sweltering, steamy, mid-July heat-and-humidity that the visiting Orioles were battling against in their 9-5 Thursday evening Eisenhower Field victory against the home-standing Cardinals.
And it certainly wasn’t just the happy little waking-dreams players, coaches and spectators alike found themselves yearnfully dreaming as they half-listened, in the idle moments between pitches or while standing, sweaty and soaking, in on-deck circles or third-base coaching-boxes, to the siren sound of the whistles of lifeguards and squealing voices of fresh-faced, apple-cheeked boys-and-girls plunging gleefully into the deep and refreshingly cool waters of the not-so-distant Eisenhower Park public pool that the Orioles found themselves struggling mightily against after jumping out to a commanding 8-1 top-of-the-third-inning lead.

No, friends, in the end, for all their excellent early inning pitching (Luke Hache 3 IP, 2 hits, 2 runs, 5 K’s), fielding (Alex Jakubowski had two first-inning assists at second base), and ability to generate runs (Brennen Ravenberg, Luke Hache and Drew Wendorff scored two runs each in the first three innings, while Scott LaBranch and Connor Olechna added one a piece), the Orioles mightiest struggle of the evening proved to be the effort it took to resist the Cardinals slow, steady, determined, inning-by-inning, run-by-menacingly-produced-run mid-to-late inning comeback attempt which produced one run in the bottom of the third, two in the bottom of the 4th, another run in the bottom of the fifth--scored by Jimmie Gaston, who led off the inning with a sharp single—and threatened to transmogrify the Orioles early, light-hearted optimism into a kind of Sharknado-like Thursday evening feeling of lose and desolation.

But, after the Cardinals advanced their number one hitter to 2nd base with two outs in the bottom of the 5th, the door was finally closed when Oriole 3rd basemen Ryan Lafferty confidently fielded a sharp two-hopper to third, expertly—and with a David-Wright-like aplomb—looked the Cardinal runner back to second, and then fired a strike across the diamond to first base to end the inning.

The Orioles were then able to somehow engineer a run in the 6th off Cardinal pitcher Carl Nicklas, who otherwise spent the last two innings of the game mowing down Oriole hitters (2 IP, 2 hits, 1 run, 6K’s), before Oriole pitcher Drew Wendorff made swift work of the Cardinals in the bottom of the 6th, striking out two and forcing a slow grounder to first.  With the victory, the Orioles evened their record at 3-3 and look forward not only to a pair of early-in-the-week games next week, but also, perhaps, to a July weekend spent in the deep and coolly refreshing waters of a local pool.

Pitchers:
Orioles: Luke Hache (3), Drew Wendorff (3)
Cardinals: Costello (2), Amarat (2) Nicklas (2)
