The Rebels jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but New Canaan rallied right back in the 2nd with 7 runs of their own and then held the Rebels offense in check the rest of the way.  Dan Fitzsimmons pitched the first two innings and Matt Langevin pitched four strong innings.  With the loss, the Rebels are eliminated from their first ever 50/70 State Tournament.  They will now turn their attention back to the smaller diamond for tournaments in Southington and the Ken Hungerford Tournament at Wolcott Park.  Later this Summer, the Rebels will travel to Aberdeen Maryland to play a tournament at the Cal Ripken facility.  Stay tuned for details.

July 11th

West Hartford 5, Newtown 3

The Hungerford Tournament began in fine fashion for the West Hartford 11U Bandits Thursday night with a 5-3 win over Newtown at Wolcott Park under the lights.  The Bandits looked sharp from start to finish most notably in the field and on the mound.

Chase Rancourt started the game on the mound and went two scoreless innings for the win, striking out five in the process.  Jack Livingstone took over from Chase and went four strong innings, also striking out five, and pitched himself out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth to close out the game.

On offense, the Bandits scored three runs in the third inning on a two-run double from Tim Cotter and a ground out RBI from Griffin Van Rye.  The Bandits scored again in the fourth as walks to Will Layden and Tommy Costello and multiple wild pitches brought two runs home.

The Bandits are back in action on Saturday night at Wolcott Park at 6PM in a battle for West Hartford versus the Little League all stars.

July 13th

West Hartford 17, WHLL 11U 10

The West Hartford 11U Bandits won the battle of West Hartford in the Hungerford Tournament Saturday night, beating the West Hartford Little League Dirty Dogs 17-10.

The game went back and forth for the first four innings after which the Bandits led 8-6, but in the top of the fifth inning the Bandits scored seven runs to blow the game open and never looked back.

The Bandit offense was led by Griffin Van Rye (1 hit, 2 walks, 2 runs), Timmy Andrews (2 hits, 2 walks, 2 runs), Jay Falvey (1 hit, 3 walks, 3 runs), and Tommy Costello (1 hit, 1 walk, 2 runs, 2 RBI), but everyone contributed to the effort.

On the hill, Tim Cotter pitched two scoreless innings to get the win and Chase Rancourt pitched the final two frames to close out the game.

The Bandits are back in Hungerford action Sunday at 2:00 PM against the Simsbury Mustangs at Wolcott Park.

July 14th

West Hartford 7, Simsbury 6

The West Hartford 11U Bandits won in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon, beating the Simsbury Mustangs 7-6 in 8 innings to remain undefeated in the tournament.

The game opened slowly for the Bandits as both the bats and the defense seemed to take a siesta for the first three and a half innings.  Tim Cotter was solid on the mound, starting the game and allowing only one earned run in three innings.  The Mustangs scored a few unearned runs however, and took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth.

The Bandits woke up in the bottom of the fourth after Gabe Salomons hit a single.  The next two batters walked and Salomons ended up scoring on a wild pitch.  Then Griffin Van Rye provided the first dramatic moment, going yard with a laser line drive to left center that plated three runs and knotted the game at four.

The teams traded two runs in the fifth, but then couldn’t score in the sixth sending the game into extra innings.  Both teams went down in order in the seventh and in the top of the eighth Simsbury got a runner in scoring position before Jack Livingstone retired the next three batters in order.

In the bottom of the eighth, Gabe Salomons got things started again with another single.  The Bandits proceeded to load the bases with a bunt single from Matt Lazor and an intentional walk to Tim Cotter.  With the previous batter striking out to provide the second out, it was up to Timmy Andrews to provide the heroics and he did just that – smacking a walk-off single between the shortstop and third baseman to end the game and start the celebration.

In what was a close game, the Cardinals were right on the Pirates tail with 3 runs of their own and also a pitching debut by Xavier Amarat.

This one came down to the wire with Simplicio scoring in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball to give the Pirates a one run advantage. Orioles 12, Pirates 6

Thursday evenings—even swampy, soupy, rain-soaked ones—have long been considered the best evening to play baseball in America –on this I am confident we can all agree—and this Thursday evening’s Eisenhower Field match-up between the Pirates and the Orioles—won 12-6 victory by the home-standing Orioles—proved to be no exception to this long cherished athletic truism.
It was a game that featured, as all in attendance, bug-bitten and Off-scented though they may have been, cheerfully asserted, all the best that could be hoped for in a Summer League baseball game: there was the see-sawing first two innings in which the Pirates’ four-run top of the first inning explosion was swiftly and emphatically answered by the home-standing Orioles’ three run first- and four run second-inning; there was the third-inning two-out two-run home run—a screaming line-drive shot to deepest just left-of-centerfield—by Shortstop-Pitcher Drew Wendorff (3-3, 4 runs) which pushed the Orioles, who’d managed to score only four runs during the entire first week of the season, up to the ten-run mark for the second time this week; there was both the hot 6th inning fielding of Connor Olechna, who confidently gathered in two straight sharp shots to second to help preserve the Orioles lead, and the impressive first inning glove work of Rightfielder Jack Navins and 1st basement Gregory Olechna, which allowed the Orioles to escape the Pirates first-inning onslaught; there was the 5th inning’s memorably mad-cap scramble at home plate which ended with no less than five Pirate and Oriole players searching desperately for either plate or ball amid a tangle of arms, legs, shouts and mud as pitcher-first-basemen Luke Hache (3-4, 2 runs) completed his daringly successful attempt to score from second-base on the same passed ball that scored Wendroff from third; and there was the consistently excellent fielding, hitting and base-running performance of twelve year old number-two-hitter-and-third basemen, Ariel Caplan (1-3, 3 runs) who continues to exert a maturely-calming presence over all he surveys.
But most impressive of all, as far as Oriole fans were concerned, there was, for the second game in a row, the up-and-down-the-line-up contributions from the whole of the Orioles batting order (13 hits and runs scored by five of the nine batters), produced despite the strength of the Pirates pitching staff (Max Leyland and Andrew Mazzatto pitched an inning a piece for the Pirates, and George Andrews and Jack Tousignant both pitched two), and the excellent Oriole pitching performances of both Hache (3 IP, 2 hits, 2 k’s) and Wendorff (3 IP, 2 hits, 5 K’s), which limited the heavy-hitting Pirates to just two runs over the last five innings of the game, and allowed, ultimately, the Orioles to gain control of the game in the middle innings and then cruise, finally, to an exciting, hard-won team-victory.

Orioles Pitching: Luke Hache (3IP), Drew Wendorff (3IP)

Pirates Pitching: Max Leyland (1IP), Andrew Mazzatto (1IP), George Andrews (2IP)Jack Tousignant (2IP)

Orioles: Drew Wendorff
