A.C. Petersen Farms Restaurant 11 Mr. Trophy 7

AC Petersen’s overcame the elements on Sunday to capture an 11-7 win over Mr. Trophy at Wolcott Park.  Both teams battled a steady drizzle the whole game, which led to less than ideal playing conditions.  But despite the wet field, ACP’s defense came up big when it counted.  Solid middle infield play from Elias Heinen and Carl Nicklas kept Mr. Trophy in check throughout the game.  The offense got contributions up and down the line-up en route to the victory.

ACP got on the board in the top of the first.  E. Heinen (1-3, 2 runs, 1 RBI) led off the game with a walk, and eventually scored on a bases loaded walk to Sam Kursman.  Mr. Trophy threatened in their half of the first as they had two runners aboard with two outs following a double off the bat of Jonathan Perez (1-3, 1 run).   But shortstop E. Heinen made a spectacular bare-handed play on a slow roller from Anthony Mancini to get the final out.  ACP starter Peter Simplicio finished with two shutout innings.  Dylan Heinen (0-1, 2 runs) and Isaiah Meyer (0-2, 2 runs) got on base to open up the second and came around to score on a double from Will Carpenter.  Carpenter was the offensive star for ACP going 4-4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs.

The score was 5-0 in the third when Mr. Trophy got their offense going. Casey Shane  (1-3, HR, 2 runs, 1 RBI) led off the inning with a deep drive off the storage shed over the right field wall to start the scoring.  Mr. Trophy then rallied for 5 more runs in the inning to take a one run lead.  ACP answered right back in the fourth with 4 runs of their own including a towering double off the bat of E. Heinen and consecutive singles from Carpenter, Bryan Renker (2-4, 1 run, 2 RBI) and Spencer Bavaro (3-3, 1 run, 1 RBI).  Renker came on to pitch in the fourth and fifth, limiting Mr. Trophy to one run before Robert Schunder shut the door in the 6th to seal the win.

Beachland Tavern 6 Goldbergs Bagels 5

In a thrilling match-up of two 6-1 teams, the Beachland Tavern Bandits eked out a 6-5 win over the Goldberg's Bagel Grasshoppers Saturday at Eisenhower Field.

While Bandits pitching turned-in yet another impressive performance, this game was won almost exclusively on defense. Rookie Declan McCann had a statement day at second base, joining with veteran shortstop Alex Jakubowski and first baseman Owen McGoldrick for a season-high nine infield put-outs. In the second inning, the Bandits' Andrew Reicher made a magnificent catch in the outfield that almost assuredly robbed the Hopper's Jovani Owen of an extra-base hit.

Grasshopper pitchers Nicholas Kane, Cody Brew and Thomas Redden struck out ten and held the typically offense-rich Bandits to only five hits. McGoldrick scored twice for the Bandits, as did Jakubowski who went 2-for-3 with a double and two key RBIs. In the third inning, Garrett Brown ripped a shot just short of the centerfield fence for a double.

On the mound, Jakubowski and McGoldrick combined for six strikeouts over the first four frames, while Bandits closer Ryan Murphy converted his fourth save opportunity of the year. Veteran catcher Scott LaBranch once again contributed another gritty six innings behind the plate. The Bandits were joined on the bench Saturday by teammate Camden Hebert, who was recently placed on the 60-day DL with a broken thumb.

Goldberg's Pitching: Nicholas Kane (2IP), Cody Brew (3IP), Thomas Redden (1IP)
Beachland Pitching: Alex Jakubowski (2IP), Owen McGoldrick (2IP), Ryan Murphy (2IP)

Damons Tavern 13 Effies Place 10

After starting the season 0-6, the Damon's Tavern Bulls won their first game of the season defeating Effie's Place 13-10 with a stellar offensive and defensive performance.  The Bulls 13 runs scored was their highest run total of the season while the 10 given up was their lowest runs allowed of the season. It was a close game.  Effie's was leading after two innings 5-4 but Damon's Tavern scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead 7-5 and never gave it back.  A key to the game was the pitching of Griffin Paulus who shutout Effie's in the 3rd and 4th innings which stretched their lead to 11-5 at the end of the fourth inning.  Effie's scored 5 runs in that last two innings but it wasn't enough. There were many offense note worthy performances by the Bulls.  Sam Heller was 3-3 including a double with 3 runs scored, Keegan Bankoff reached based in all three of his at bats and Drew Lewis led the team with 2 RBIs.  Austin Crossley went 2-2 with a walk and an RBI and Grant Pennoyer was 2-3 with a run scored.  Harrison Sweeney was 2-3 including a triple that knocked in 2 runs. Effie's played an excellent game.  Their defensive highlight was throwing out a Bull's runner at 3rd base on a steal attempt to end the 5th inning.

Dicks Sporting Goods 4 Harry’s Pizza 3

On what was a beautiful Saturday for baseball, the play matched the weather.  The game started with pitchers for both teams, Eli Salomons for Harry's and Brian Chelli for Dick's giving strong performances.  Salomons also played strong at the plate with at least two plays protecting the plate and fending off runs. But Dick's bats were persistent with Jack Brown, Drew Seidman, Brian Chelli, and Matt Barrows all having multiple hits. This group also played great defensively.  This was a fun game.

Harry's Pizza Pitching: Salomons (2 IP), Kristofak (2 IP), Kennedy (2 IP).
Dick's Sporting Good Pitching: Chelli (3 IP), Brown (1 IP), Seidman (2 IP).

Jakes Wayback Burgers 10 Rizzutos 8

Baseball weather resumed Saturday as Jake's Wayback Burgers took the field at Fern Park and came out swinging, with Jack Correia and Avery Theriault smashing a pair of singles.  A single by Landon Traverse scored the pair of RBI's. As the 2nd inning approached with 2 outs, the Hot Rods scored again on singles by the one, two tag team of Correia and Theriault, this time scoring Dylan Jackson and Quinn Spada. Tom Demeo also contributed with a big single and score in the 3rd inning. Rizzuto's fought diligently in the fourth inning scoring the max 5 runs on errors, and hit by Rizutto's, like the triple Brad Blanchard pounded. But The Hot Rods heated up in the 5th with 5 runs of its own with a double by Correia, triple by Traverse, single by Eric Labrie, double by Tom Demeo, and bases on balls which eventually scored Dylan Jackson and Colin Richard. Dicks Sporting Goods 11 Effies Place 10

Different from the day before this late afternoon game was wet and wild. Both teams were faced with nasty weather conditions and maintaining dry balls for the pitchers was tough. But the kids toughed it out and committed parents huddled under umbrellas cheering them on.

It was a seesaw battle right to the end with rule questions to boot. Strong performances by Effie's Christian and Dick's Ross Kowalsky, Liam Knapp, Drew Seidman and Ethan Raisner at pitcher.
