Charter Oak International Academy is a magnet elementary school that has instituted an international Baccalaureate program. Students in West Hartford can apply for a spot at Charter Oak, which offers Spanish language instruction for grades K-5 and a global studies curriculum. Charter Oak's distinctive building dates back to 1927, and the school bears the name of the state's famed oak tree, allegedly the hiding place of Connecticut's first constitution. Colonists supposedly hid the document in the tree in 1687 to keep it from British agents.
