There is always a reason for a price-increase - I can't remember ever reading about a reason for aRead More price-decrease. It's possible no one else has noticed this. Isn't capitalism wonderful?

The disease came from China! Aids came from Africa, other diseases come from Mexico but yet we letRead More people flood to this country and they bring those diseases with them!

Get back on topic. And while you're at it cut the condescending, holier-than-thou, I'm smarter thatRead More you, intellectual pinhead act. You don't want to hear others ideas and opinions. We are somehow not on your level. The only jihad is yours. Your posts speak volumes. Thanks in advance.
Joe Blow April 7, 2014 at 07:15 pm
Hey Reyn, you write a lot but say nothing then follow up with some insult or name calling, typicalRead More liberal B.S. What you refer to "jihad" is me laying out the truth that you choose to ignore while trying to cover it up with your circle talk or backpedaling. You are a weak coward like all liberal loons who backdoor everything.
Joe Blow April 8, 2014 at 01:49 am
Hey Tabasco and Reyn, maybe this will help put things in perspective for you and give you a simpleRead More understanding of the working middle class getting raped by the gubbmint. Well Larry, I read your blog and have some mixed feelings on the subject. First, the human body isRead More not intended to be a herbivore (you can start by looking at your teeth which are intended to rip and eat meat). Having said that, I'm not sure the crap they sell in stores these days would constitute as "meat" and the slop they sell at fast food places is even worse. Your blogs references to your grandparents and parents ways to obtain meat is the school I come from. We eat a lot of venison and the chicken, pork and beef we eat are all farm raised and butchered by myself. I do all my own cutting and packaging as well as the processing. Yes, I do make my own hotdogs and other processed meats.

It's amazing how one obscure thread about free coffee brings out so many opposing views onRead More everything but coffee..... Don't you people have lives? It's free coffee people not "Cosmos". Maybe you folks are drinking too much coffee..... or something!!

They are laying off massively in Maryland. Why in the world would they come to the highest taxedRead More state is what I can't figure out. Then again probably some quid pro quo behind the scenes between the 2 idiot Gov's.
Jen DellaCamera March 30, 2014 at 08:37 pm
They laid off hundreds in CT as well - to go to Maryland! Someone I know was laid off recently -Read More except it wasn't a layoff, they offered him a job - it was a DEMOTION in Maryland. Way to go, Verizon. Glad my phone is AT&T.

Dr Barba has left the state last year. This list is definitely useless. Who ever put thisRead More together should be let go.

I went to a cardiologist whom I feel was responsible for saving my mother's life on two occasions.Read More The doctor was my PCP and always gave me reliable referrals for surgery. Several of those surgeons made the list, but not the cardiologist, who is still highly regarded by his peers in Hartford County. I agree with Barbara and Jay in regards to the validity of this report. It is really a shame that politics have infecterd our medical profession.
George O'Hara March 24, 2014 at 04:40 pm
Yes Dr. Caron Grin passed away as was mentioned by another commenter. I also went to her and IRead More agree that she belonged on that list. However her name should have been removed some time ago. I echo the comments of others that this list is worthless if it is not being kept up to date.

@Joe Mancini - What the heck are you talking about? Duchess sells Alcohol? Salads cause LiverRead More disease? McDonalds coffee causes impaired driving? So alcohol is good for the liver and kidneys? Please put down the shot and beer it is STILL illegal to drink and drive. I don't think its illegal to eat an apple pie from McDonalds. Never mind high, your plastered, put down the beer tap, sober up, realize your addiction and enjoy a glass of water for a change. You may need some detox before you stop cold turkey, you can die if you don't ween off it if you drink alcohol daily for a long period of time. Breweries are NOT THE ANSWER.
Joe Mancini April 16, 2014 at 05:36 pm
@OpportunistWatch-Thanks for the laugh. Yes, people go to McDonalds for the salads like men go toRead More strip clubs for the free buffet. The "food" McDonalds serves is so loaded with chemicals that have to be metabolized through the liver and filtered by the Kidneys, this leads to disease as well as diabetes. But you continue on your crusade against people enjoying a brew every now and then and go eat your salad at McDonalds.
Arek Wenta April 16, 2014 at 10:04 pm
Yeah the buffets are great! Not to mention the obscene amount of salt in their foods which isRead More contributing greatly to a slew of health problems. And beer in moderation is actually good for you. In more ways than one. Since when are motor vehicle deaths an inevitable outcome of a brewery? Just because they make it doesn't mean you have to drink it. Cars don't go kill people on their own, they need someone with a good dose of idiot to do it for them. Which you, opportunist, have plenty of. Plus, with the rate at which craft breweries are growing it's an excellent venture to pursue and boost our economy.

The Crown Market for me is a way of Jewish Life and Community. I am so happy that all theseRead More wonderful people have come forward to keep this store alive! The Crown always has the best Passover selection and kosher foods. Thank you to everyone who made this all possible!
Kim Thomas March 1, 2014 at 09:10 am
This is wonderful to hear. Like Laurie, I am addicted to the Crown tuna. I also think the peopleRead More who work at Crown are very friendly and helpful. Patch, you rallied and allow us to continue to shop Local. The Crown experience certainly beats the cold, commercial Walmart one!
Gerson Goldstein March 1, 2014 at 11:33 am
The Crown staying open is such so important to the Jewish community and Jewish traditions. ThisRead More place has such Incredibly strong memories for people who moved here from NY in the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's needing a Kosher, Jewish grocer. Like Jews landing on Ellis Island, this was a landmark institution that Jews came to, to stock their homes with kosher food only previously readily available mostly in NY. My memories of walking through the isles with my mom and all the little old Jewish ladies pinching my cheek and saying "What a handsome little Jewish man you are, " was part of my youth, strengthening my understanding of a Jewish community, nurturance and support. The feeling of love and acceptance normally only found in your own immediate family. The Jewish community came together and saved this important part of the Greater Hartford Jewish Community, And thank G-d for saving the Crown TUNA!!

United Technologies will invest as much as 4.5 billion dollars in Connecticut over the next 5 years.Read More They are collecting 400 mio in income credits. United Technologies expects to make net 6.3billion dollars in 2014 and 6.9 bio in 2015. Ct has a state corporate income tax of 7.5% meaning they pay in just corporate income tax about 500mio a year. (and will receive under 30 mio a year for the next 14 -meaning net the corporation will be paying Connecticut treasury net 470 million a year. Obviously their executives and employees also pay tax; also use services in Ct -which then leads to more business for many . Could you help me understand how you subsidize United Technologies? A company is not a person. They dont use education. Etc. Sounds like you think we would be all better off if these corporations left, and you stopped subsidizing them? You honestly think that if the top 30 corporations in Ct left you would have a smaller tax bill?
Harry February 27, 2014 at 10:37 pm
Porter, if the 7.5% rate is to high for theses specific companies, why isn't the rate reduced forRead More all corporations in the state? Maybe I'm a bit confused on subsidies / credits, But wasn't part of the deal that we would be building new facilities for them? Who is paying for that? I don't want one business to leave the state nor do I believe that we should bribe anyone to stay. If the rate is to high for Pratt then it's too high for everyone. Is there anywhere we can find out the exact amount that Pratt paid to the state of ct for year 2013?

While we see Sikorsky get hit with the recession and shed 100's of jobs, Joe Lieberman rode off intoRead More the Kibbutz with millions and Rosa & Stanley Greenberg is right behind him. It looks like she’s raising money and giving it to herself.” [No kidding!] “..Rosa DeLauro has established a persona of being a champion of the safety net while at the same time being a champion of amassing great wealth for herself and her husband [Stanley Greenberg] during her tenure in office.”

Isadinsky, I was very much in agreement with your post until I got to point b). Blue Back Square isRead More almost entirely made up of chain stores and not "mom and pop" stores like Crown. If you want to point to BBS as a stellar example, then we should not be concerned with the closing of Crown, as it will likely go the same way as BBS - likely being replaced with a chain store, perhaps one of the same ones. Perhaps I didn't understand your points correctly, but it seems to me that your point a) contradicts your point b).

Is it possible that when the Crown Market replaced its strict Orthodox kashrut supervision withRead More Conservative supervision, that many religious customers stopped buying there? And this led to the demise?
Lew Block February 20, 2014 at 05:16 pm
I am guilty, I shop at the crown for specialty items like bakery or deli. Do I buy pasta or paperRead More towels or cereal there? No, I go to Big Y or Wal-Mart for that. And I guess they couldn't survive on just the specialty business, and not the core items. Mr. Shaul, I am not kosher (not even Jewish actually) so that doesn't matter to me.
