Last week we asked "What Was Special About These Gardens?" and our lone commenter answered with another question. "Was it a Victory Garden?" asked Beth Ryan.

You're absolutely right, Beth! The official answer provided by the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society is: "Governor Baldwin is seen here working in the war gardens in 1943. These gardens were planted during World War I and World War II to reduce the pressure on the public food supply brought on by the war effort."
